Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands – it's your choice of an all-inclusive surf trip

We offer different surf trips to different destinations.

We have four different types of destinations on the Sumatran island chain. Depending on the time of the year, we will offer different areas to avoid crowd, seasonal winds and swell directions. During the years we have been scoring less known spots with no crowds. We are operating up North and will travel to all areas on any guest requests. Please feel free to contact us for any details and info for those special trips.

MENTAWAI.

This our normal and most classic boat trip that we offer. Departure and arrival in Padang (West Sumatra). This trip will be operated in Mentawai island chain.

MENTAWAI TELO

This will be a combination between North Mentawai until North Telo. Departure and arrival in Padang (West Sumatra). Lots of different types of waves, different landscapes, great fishing and low crowd factor.

TELO

With departure and arrival in Padang (West Sumatra), the classic Telo trip is a less crowded trip with less quantity of waves as the Mentawai but as good and perfect lineups. You will surf spots that you never heard before.

NORTH SUMATRA.

King Millennium will be operating in North Sumatra depending on demand. This destination can depart from Nias Island. Passengers have to fly from Medan International airport (capital of North Sumatra) to Gunungsitoli airport on the Island of Nias then. Lion Air and Garuda Indonesia flying from Medan to Gunungsitoli to Medan 6 times a day and the fly is 50 minutes. Another option is to fly from Padang to Gunungsitoli by Lion air, one time a day.

Our staff will pick you up in Gunungsitoli airport and drive 2 hours to the port, where the King Millennium will be waiting for departure at night up to Noth of Nias Island. This area is one of the most fun, uncrowded, remote areas in Indonesia. Please contact us for more detailed information.

The King Millennium is based in the capital of West Sumatra, city of Padang where the International airport of Minangkabau is.

Here in the historical, colourful port of Muara Padang, know for the old Dutch colonial and spices trades six centuries ago, with classic colonial buildings is where the King millennium fleet and headquarters are and the main departure to the offshore Sumatran Islands chains.

Our staff in Padang will pick up our passengers on the Minangkabau International airport of Padang and drive to meeting point.
(1-hour drive) where we will meet our guests and relax before the departure of the boat around 8pm (the best arrival time on Padang International airport is before 4pm).

Dinner and drinks must be had before heading to the boat, as dinner is not included on that day.

2. How we get to the Islands

From Padang to the closest spot to the Mentawai are 90 nautical miles, that means the crossing over night thru the Mentawai strait will take 10 hours (depending on weather conditions) that we will cross at night to arrive on the surf spot first light on our first day of surf.

As we are dependent on the nature, it can rarely happen that the Harbour Master can close the port and there are restrictions for navigation due weather factors. This is not very likely to happen but if this case accures the crossing will be done during the day.

3. The Surf

Once on the Islands our experienced surf guides will take you to the best areas depending on the group, forecast, surf abilities, etc…

During our time in the islands the boat will be anchored on the surf spot early in the morning before sunrise until sunset, so all the travelling of the boat will be primarily during the night. In case of changing wind we can travel to other spots during the day, but these decisions will be made by the surf guides.

The weather, the winds especially in this part of the tropics are constantly changing and experience are crucial for the decision making.

Depending on the winds we can change spots during the day, decided by the surf guide. Weather, winds especially, in this part of the tropics are in constant change, experience plays a big part here.

Sumatran waters are also well known for the quality of fishing. Once you get into fishing, you will be hooked forever.

Enjoy a relaxed holiday forgetting your daily business, here in remote areas, surfing, fishing, eating, sleeping and having a great time.

Behaviour in the water

Sharing is part of the essence of these trips. So we ask you to bring the right attitude while surfing with passengers from the same or other boats.

Remember:

If we get to a spot where there’s already one boat anchored with its passenger surfing, it is advisable to wait for a little while and then enter the water. How much would you hate it if you were surfing and another boat arrived and before the anchor is lowered, a group of ten surfers paddled your way? Give some time to others is always a good option.

Do NOT drop in and respect the other surfers. There are no local surfers on the islands, so respecting each other and everyone’s turns is the way to go; we are all foreigners in the water.

Enjoy as much as you can while respecting the place, the sea and its people. These islands are an unique place; help us keep it this way.
